Immunostaining of formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded sections of chronically infected kidneys with polyclonal rabbit anti-serum for HBD-1 (Fig. 2a) and HBD-2 (Fig. 2b). Strong cytoplasmatic staining by HBD-1 immunohistochemistry was experienced in 20 to 30 percent of distal tubules, loops of Henle and collecting ducts in all normal and chronically infected tissue sections. All glomerula and proximal tubules were negative for HBD-1 immunostaining. HBD-2 polyclonal antibody stained only sections from chronically infected tissue samples with moderate to strong intensity in distal tubules, loops of Henle and collecting ducts (Fig. 2b). Glomerula as well as proximal tubules showed no staining. Fig. 2c shows negative staining with preimmune rabbit serum.
