Serial quantitative culture of gastrointestinal carriage of vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium and concomitant use of antimicrobial agents in case 2. Note. Intravenous piperacillin-tazobactam 4.5 gm iv q12h, daptomycin 250 mg iv q12h, and metronidazole 500 mg iv q8h were given from day 3 for empirical treatment of spontaneous bacterial peritonitis, while intravenous piperacillin-tazobactam 4.5 gm iv q12h, and daptomycin 250 mg iv q12h were given between day 45 and 56 for clinical diagnosis of another episode of spontaneous bacterial peritonitis. The dotted horizontal line denoted the detection limit of VRE in fecal samples by broth enrichment ~ 200 cfu/g (2.3 log10 cfu/g).
